How to get compliant with the Whistleblowing Law

A code of conduct is a set of rules, principles, and values that guide the behaviour of individuals within an organisation. It outlines the standards that are expected of employees, and sets out the values and principles that the organisation upholds.

A code of conduct is often written down and made available to all employees, so that everyone is aware of the expectations and standards of behaviour. It may include guidelines on topics such as honesty, integrity, respect, fairness, and responsibility.

Why is the Code of Conduct so important?

A code of conduct is important for several reasons.

  1. First, it helps to establish a clear set of standards and expectations for employees. This can help to promote ethical behaviour within the organisation.
  1. Second, it can provide employees with guidance on how to handle ethical dilemmas and challenges.
  1. Third, it can help to prevent misconduct and unethical behaviour, which can have serious consequences for both the organisation and the individuals involved.
  1. Finally, a code of conduct can help to build trust and confidence in the organisation, both among employees and stakeholders.

Several international standards relate to business ethics and conduct

Some examples include:

  • The United Nations Global Compact: The Global Compact is a voluntary initiative. It encourages businesses to align their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption.

  • The ISO 26000: ISO 26000 is a guidance standard on social responsibility. It provides organisations with a framework for understanding and addressing their social, environmental, and economic impacts.

  • The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises: The OECD Guidelines are a set of recommendations for multinational enterprises on responsible business conduct. They provide guidance on issues such as human rights, labour, environment, anti-corruption, and consumer interests.

  • The Global Reporting Initiative: The Global Reporting Initiative is an international organisation that promotes the use of sustainability reporting as a way for organisations to transparently disclose their economic, environmental, and social performance.

These international standards provide organisations with guidance on how to operate in an ethical and responsible manner. Implementing a code of conduct also help to promote trust and confidence in business.
